Super Bowl Bound

Super Bowl Bound

I spent the AFC Championship game at Jack’s on the South Side (recently dissed by Rocky Mountain News writer Bill Johnson). Jack’s is around the corner from my studio so it as close to home as I can get. And it was a wonderful, energetic crowd. Once again I made many new friends, and experienced Steeler history with them. By the end of the evening, the bar was packed with jubilant Black and Gold celebrating the AFC Championship win. Chants, shouts, and cheers broke out every several minutes. Kisses, hugs and high fives were being tossed out like confetti to anyone who would reciprocate.

Before the game Pittsburgh Police prepared for a positive outcome by placing barricades on every corner of Carson street. Within moments of the Steelers win, fans poured out onto the streets, handing out high-fives and towel waves to every car that passed. In return car horns rang out with,”Here we Go Steelers, Here we Go, Toot Toot!” as they paraded through the South Side. And non-stop horn-honking rang out down Carson Street marking Pittsburgh’s return to the Super Bowl.

When I started Sixteen Sundays the Steelers were coming off a 6-10 season. Now, two years later, the Steelers are headed to the Super Bowl. As a member of the Steeler Nation, I have to say it has been a great ride. These two years have been a tale of two heroes. One starting his career with gusto, the other ending his career with style. Steeler fans love to look back at the glory days of the dynasty, but have been waiting for the new dynasty. Ten years after Super Bowl XXX, Jerome Bettis helps Ben Roethlisberger make his way to Super Bowl XL, and in doing so JB makes his way back to his home town of Detroit. These two years will mark the passing of the torch. And an opportunity to make history. A history that has been waiting in the collective consciousness of the Steeler Nation since 1980: the fifth Lombardi trophy, the One for the Thumb!

I’ll see you all in Detroit. You don’t need a ticket to experience the greatest Steeler tailgate in a decade, but you might need to bring your mittens. Just remember not to wash your lucky jersey before the Super Bowl. I won’t mind standing next to you if you smell like cigars and sweat. My jersey stinks of burn barrels and beer. That will be our badge of honor. Here We Go Steelers, Here We Go! Pittsburgh’s Going to the Super Bowl!

Final outcome:
Steelers defeat Broncos 34-17 in AFC Championship Game
Pittsburgh will face the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL, Detroit, MI
